Here at First Church we call Sunday School classes “Small Groups.” Whether you are looking to gain fellowship, participate in a specific study, or enjoy the company of other people, we have a group that can fit your needs. For more information about what classes we offer, please visit the small group tab.
When you hear the words Christian Education, do you immediately picture children sitting down in a Sunday school class? Sunday school is definitely an important part of our ministries, but we hope you will discover that Christian Education means so much more. At First Church, we believe that Christian Education happens when we offer a safe place for children and youth to make friends and grow through God’s love. We offer several levels of Youth Education and opportunities to be active in the church and the community. Explore those opportunities in the Children and Youth Tab above.

Overall History
In 1872 only one year after the founding of the city of Huntington, Alonzo Palmer organized a Sunday School in his carpenter shop on 3rd Avenue, near 8th Street. The members of that class eventually became the founders of First United Methodist.
Since then, the congregation has occupied three buildings. The present church, with its massive stone towers and beautiful stained glass was built in 1912. The first service was held on Easter Sunday, April 12, 1914. The education wing was dedicated on January 30, 1960.
The church with the gray stone towers is a landmark in downtown Huntington, but the building is not First Church-the people are. We are active volunteers in mission throughout the community and beyond. You will find that there is a wealth of opportunities to worship, learn, and be involved in the mission of Christ’s Church at First United Methodist.
150th Anniversary
First Church celebrated 150 years in 2022! There were several events being to mark this wonderful occasion including our “1872 Acts of Compassion.” This was an opportunity for members of the church to reach out and make a difference in our community during 2022.
